Hi, guys! My name is Chantai (pronounced "shawn-tay") Thomas, and I'm a sophomore at the University of North Carolina-Wilmington. I LOVE being a Seahawk and I can't imagine being anywhere else but this amazing college surrounded by all of the wonderful people that make the Dub what it is. Currently I'm planning on double-majoring in English and Philosophy, and my long-term goal is to work for a publishing house in a big city or somewhere abroad. I also really hope to study in the UK before my time is up here. I am from Fayetteville, NC (graduated from Terry Sanford, go Bulldogs!) where my mom, my sister, and my puppy live. This year I'm working for UNCW's Office of Transitions Programs as a Seahawk Link and I'm so excited to help welcome incoming freshmen into the Seahawk family.
To all of my UNI freshmen: I'm so happy to have to opportunity to work with you all this year and I really hope your first year at UNCW turns out to be something incredibly special. I will be here throughout your first semester as a resource, a friend, and a mentor to help you navigate your first foray into college life. If you ever need anything at all, I encourage you to reach out to me, and I'll do my best to help you however I can. Freshman year goes by much quicker than you can imagine, and I know it can be fast and scary and exhausting and exhilarating, and in all of that it can be easy to lose yourself. I urge you all, above everything else, to take this experience at your own pace. Enjoy it. Appreciate it. Recognize it for what it is: the beginning of a new chapter in your life. This is your shining moment, your big break! Nothing that happens here will be the end of your world, and everything that happens here--good or bad--will only serve to build you as the amazing person you're destined to be, and that you already are. As Walt Whitman wrote, “Read these leaves in the open air every season of every year of your life, re-examine all you have been told...dismiss whatever insults your own soul, and your very flesh shall be a great poem and have the richest fluency not only in its words but in the silent lines of its lips and face and between the lashes of your eyes and in every motion and joint of your body.” Don't stress the small things. Don't fight change. Don't question yourself. You above all people know what you want, and you deserve exactly that. Go on this adventure with the comfort of knowing that you are the single most important thing to ever happen to your world. Take every opportunity that comes to you, and to make the most of every situation. And I promise that what you gain in return will be greater than your wildest dreams. Well, congratulations on joining the Seahawk family! I can't wait to meet you all in August and I can't wait to see what wonderful things this fall brings for all of us. I hope you're as excited as I am! With love, Chantai |
